Mother Leaves Baby Alone Inside A Car Only With A Handwritten Note

A New Zealand mother left her newborn alone in her car, while she did the shopping. She also left a note on the baby, bearing a shocking message.

The photo of a newborn left alone in a car, with a note on her became viral online. The photo was taken by a couple who found the baby in the Pak’n Save parking lot, in Porirua, New Zealand. They parked their own car next to the one with the baby, which allowed them to make the outrageous discovery.

The hand-written note left on the baby stated “My mum’s doing the shopping, call her if I need anything” and a phone number. As seen in the photo, the baby was sleeping, which made the couple who discovered her to assume the mother didn’t wanted to wake up the baby.

Despite their initial shock, the couple waited near the car, thinking the mother will return in couple of minutes. Other passers-by stopped by the car and when the mother failed to show up, one of them called her.

When the photo was posted on Facebook, it gathered thousands of comments, most of them angry. People were blaming the mother for leaving her newborn unattended.

While the baby looked well-cared for, it’s dangerous to leave a newborn alone in a car. According to Sue Campbell, Plunket National Child Safety adviser, babies can dehydrate quickly, which can put their life in danger. They are unable to defend themselves nor ask for help, if something happens.

Campbell also draws attention of the high pressure felt by new parents. They can feel overwhelmed, which can push them to make poor decisions regarding their baby. The circumstances which made the mother leave her baby alone in the car parking are still unknown, but Campbell advises parents to look for counseling at the local family center when they feel overwhelmed.

The mother who left her baby alone in the car risks a fine of $1,600, for leaving a child under 14 years of age unattended, inside a car.
